Your weekday drive might mean traffic on the I-5. Your weekend might mean loading up beach gear or heading toward the mountains. If you’re shopping for one vehicle to handle that mix, the Subaru Crosstrek deserves a closer look.
The important question is which configuration fits your life. This guide focuses on the gas-powered 2026 Crosstrek Premium, with a few things to check before choosing yours.

What makes the Crosstrek worth considering?
The 2026 Crosstrek Premium combines standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with a 2.5-liter BOXER engine producing 180 horsepower. Its 8.7 inches of ground clearance can be useful when the pavement gives way to an uneven access road.

For a Southern California shopper, think about your actual routine: where you park, who rides with you, and what you carry. Bring your everyday gear to the test drive. Checking whether your stroller, cooler or golf bag fits is more useful than guessing from a picture. AWD is useful capability, but it doesn’t replace suitable tires, careful driving or checking current road and chain requirements before a mountain trip.
Is Premium a good starting point?
Premium is worth putting on your shortlist if you want everyday convenience without automatically choosing the highest trim. Its standard equipment includes an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. EyeSight driver-assistance technology includes adaptive cruise control with lane centering. These systems assist an attentive driver; they don’t make the vehicle self-driving.

On your test drive, connect your phone, adjust the seat and check visibility. Spend some time at neighborhood speeds as well as on a suitable freeway route. Those details matter when you’ll be living with the car every day.
Check the package, not just the trim name
Two Crosstrek Premiums can have different equipment. For 2026, optional Package 14 adds features including a power moonroof, a 10-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. Those features aren’t standard on every Premium. If one matters to you, verify it on the specific vehicle’s window sticker.

For your San Diego or North County commute, seat comfort and the driver-assistance features you’ll actually use may deserve more weight than an upgrade you rarely touch.
When should you compare another Subaru?
Give the Forester or Outback a look if your regular passengers or cargo feel cramped during your Crosstrek test drive. If fuel economy is your main priority, compare the gas and hybrid choices using your mileage, purchase budget and expected ownership costs. The goal is a vehicle that fits your routine and budget. A higher trim isn’t automatically the better choice for you.
Before you decide, answer these four questions
- Which features are must-haves?
- Does your usual cargo fit with the seats positioned how you need them?
- Have you confirmed the exact trim and option package?
- Does your written out-the-door quote clearly show the vehicle price, accessories, taxes and fees?
