How your inquiries and use of this site are handled.

The short version. We use the contact details, vehicle information, messages and files you submit to respond to your inquiry. The site also uses Google Analytics 4 to understand visits and interactions, and some features save information in your browser. Google Analytics, our host and other services process information as described below.
This site is operated by Jake Smylie, an individual, in Carlsbad, California. Questions about privacy or about the information held about you can be sent to buyasubie@gmail.com.
When you submit a form on this site, we receive what you typed into it. Depending on the form, that is some combination of your name, phone number, email address, ZIP code, the model or trim you're interested in, and any message or company name you choose to add. If you ask about valuing your current Subaru, it may also include the year, model, trim, mileage, condition, VIN, loan or payoff status, repair or damage notes, and what you are considering next. Providing this is voluntary — you can browse the whole site without submitting anything.
A quote-review submission includes the quote file you upload. A build inquiry includes your selected configuration. Forms may also include the page or guide you used, referral or campaign details and the referring page, so we can understand the context of your request. Please remove sensitive identifiers from uploaded quotes before sending them.
Our host, Netlify, records standard server-side request data such as IP address, page requested, referring page and browser type.
We also use Google Analytics 4, which runs in your browser to measure visits and interactions, including page views and successful inquiries. Analytics sends usage information to Google, such as the page URL and title, referring page, and browser and device information. Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish visits and sessions. Some site features use browser storage to preserve inquiry drafts, saved builds and referral or campaign context. This storage is separate from submitting a form. A form submission sends the completed fields and any attachments through Netlify so we can receive and respond to your request.
Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to Google's servers and Google receives your IP address as part of that request. We do not receive anything from that request.
Video thumbnails on Watch a Subie and its homepage section are hosted on this site. The embedded YouTube player only loads when you press play. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). Once you activate a player, YouTube receives connection and playback information and may use cookies or similar storage under its own policies. Privacy-enhanced mode does not mean that no information is sent to Google. You can leave the player unloaded or use the separate YouTube link instead. We do not use your information for automated decision-making, and we do not build advertising profiles.
We may also disclose information if required by law.
Enquiries are kept as long as needed to help you, and afterwards for a reasonable period for record-keeping. Ask us to delete your information and we will, unless a completed transaction requires the dealership to retain records.
You can ask us to tell you what information we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. You can ask us to stop contacting you at any time and we will stop. Email buyasubie@gmail.com and we'll handle it — there's no form to fight with and no retention team to get past.
California residents have rights under California privacy law regarding access to, deletion of, and sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under that law. Exercising any of these rights will not cause us to treat you differently.
This site is meant for people old enough to buy a car. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted information here, contact us and we'll delete it.
The site is served over HTTPS and form submissions are transmitted encrypted. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, so please don't send sensitive information — social security numbers, driver's licence numbers, bank or card details — through a form on this site. Anything of that kind belongs in the dealership's secure process, never in an email or a web form.
If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted here with a new date at the top.
